The mission of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Education
Program is to reach out to the children and youth who live within
the parish community as well as the city at large. Education
Outreach strives to “put a human face” on the Cathedral
by developing youth education and service programs to address
the evolving needs and aspirations of young people. Education
Outreach is committed to developing new programs and also supporting
existing programs that will unite our diverse community, lift
spirits, and inspire hope.

As the newest addition to the Los Angeles cityscape, we view Our Lady
of the Angels as a treasure not just for the more than 4 million Catholics
in the Archdiocese but for all who visit this sacred space. We
also believe the new Cathedral provides a “teachable moment,”
for the young people in our community. Its size and grandeur
has the potential to engage them while acting as a catalyst for learning.
The Cathedral has partnered with the Archdiocesan Department
of Catholic Schools and local administrators from the Los Angeles Unified
School District to identify needs and to develop programs with the
hope of enriching young lives by providing greater access to this sacred
treasure in their midst. Several education and service projects
are already underway.
Central to all educational programs is the concept of the “Cathedral
as Teacher.” Benziger Books, a division of the McGraw-Hill
Company, has developed curriculum materials for Catholic schools--lessons
and activities designed to prepare students for their visit to the Cathedral.
An educational brochure, printed in both English and Spanish, will also
be available to enhance students’ experience of the Cathedral
by focusing on its history, ecclesiastical symbolism, art, and architecture.
Curriculum materials adapted for public school students will emphasize
the artistic aspects of the Cathedral rather than its spiritual role.
The goal of all school programs is to support the education curriculum,
address local, state, and national standards, and provide students with
a positive experience at the Cathedral.
The Cathedral offers free tours to all parochial, public, and private
school groups. Visits to the Cathedral began soon after its dedication
and continue to be a major education outreach activity. A special
group of volunteers has been identified to serve as docents for student
tours. Any school interested in having students visit the Cathedral
should contact the Director to make the necessary arrangements.
Both Catholic and public high schools have been invited to participate
in a variety of outreach programs at the Cathedral, providing opportunities
for students to fulfill service hour requirements. Opportunities
for service include: Charitable Outreach in the downtown area
under the direction of Gus Catipon, participating as Junior
Docents at the Cathedral, altar servers for Cathedral masses, and tutoring
younger students. As educational programs develop, additional
service opportunities will become available.
