Employment Opportunity: Cathedral Organist

In cooperation with the Cathedral Liturgy Team, and Music Director, the Cathedral Organist is responsible for supporting and promoting a high quality sacred music program that leads Cathedral congregations “to that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations” (Sacrosanctum Concilium #14), and embodies the Cathedral mission statement to be “a welcoming community of prayer, worship and service.”
The Cathedral Organist is a full-time exempt position.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Job duties include, but are not limited to

• Organist for all masses scheduled at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels weekend and weekday masses, funerals and other liturgies.
• Responsible for planning music and scheduling instrumentalists for weddings. (Stipend for Saturday weddings).
• Assists the Directors (English and Spanish choirs) in accompanying the Cathedral choirs in rehearsal.
• Assists in planning music for visiting choirs and visiting organists.
• Oversees Organ Recital series and any organ performances.
• Responsible for care, use of organ, and pianos.
• Coordinates with the Director of Operations on the maintenance of the Cathedral organ and pianos.
• Assists with proofreading all Music Department documents, Worship Aids, Concert Programs, etc.
• Assists the Director of Music with overseeing and maintaining the Cathedral Music Library

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Music with Organ or Sacred Music concentration.
• At least two years of a liturgical music position.
• Practicing Catholic preferred but must have the ability to respect, promote, accommodate, and not be in conflict with the mission, moral and social teachings, doctrines, and laws of the Roman Catholic faith.
• Ability to communicate effectively both in written format and oral presentation; ability to maintain organization, multi-task and establish priorities; exhibits initiative, responsibility and flexibility;  knowledge of Microsoft software applications (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint).
• Ability to work collaboratively with all related groups; clergy, parish staff, musicians and volunteers.
• Exercises considerable independence and judgment with a high level of confidentiality, working with sensitive and privileged information.
• Must be able to organize and prioritize work, be proactive, take initiative, resolve complex problems, follow through, and simultaneously manage multiple priorities.
• Must successfully pass the required background check and all requirements of the Archdiocesan
• Program for Child and Youth Protection prior to employment and maintain a satisfactory background check throughout employment.
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferable
