As children turn to their Mother, so mankind entrusts itself to Mary, Queen of Peace, in the midst of the storm, of a war unleashed a month ago between Russia and Ukraine. "To you, we consecrate the future of the whole human family, the needs and expectations of every people, the anxieties and hopes of the world." These words of the Act of Consecration is being prayed Friday by Pope Francis and all the bishops of the world. Archbishop Gomez invites us to join in prayer.
Archbishop José H. Gomez is inviting the faithful to join him and Pope Francis in a special moment of prayer on Friday, March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, when the Holy Father will consecrate Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, entrusting their peoples to Our Lady’s maternal care and protection, and for the end of the war and violence.

During this time, Ukraine is in solemn need of our prayers and support as they face such devastating loss and tragedy within their country. Pope Francis tells us, “In God, no act of love, no matter how small, and no ‘generous effort’ will ever be lost.” Pope Francis has encouraged help for the people of Ukraine. In solidarity with our suffering brothers and sisters, Archbishop Gomez has asked all parishes to participate in a non-mandatory special collection during the weekends of March 12-13 and March 19-20, 2022.
Effective March 4, 2022, Los Angeles County has lifted the indoor mask mandate. This aligns with California Department of Health Orders. As of this time, masking is strongly recommended, but no longer required in most indoor settings, including houses of worship. The Cathedral will follow this guideline. It is important to note that everyone is free to continuing wearing a mask. No person can be prevented from wearing a mask, and we will continue to have masks available for any worshipers who might request one.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption. The Cathedral will be holding special liturgical services during these 40 days of Lent, as we begin the annual rituals of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
